Using Pinterest as part of your marketing strategy isn’t a simple set-up, job over component.

Your business is going to need to be active on Pinterest. You’ll need to set-up boards and pin things to them. You’ll need to engage with other pinners, by liking their pins and re-pinning their pins when appropriate.

One of the easiest ways to get found on Pinterest is to create engaging boards your audience wants to follow. To ensure your boards get found you need to optimize them. These six tips will get you started:

Board Categories

If you don’t give each board a category, it will default to other. In the Pinterest world, this is like being thrown into uncategorized (aka as ‘unknown’). Not having a category means your board will not be displayed to pinners when they search by category.

Board Titles

The title “YUM” might be fun, but it doesn’t do much to describe the board itself. Rather, think of a more descriptive title such as “Chocolate Cakes” or “Desserts”. If you run a marketing firm, you might have a board titled, “Inspiring Ad Slogans” or “Unique Typography.”

If you feel particularly driven to add characters to a board title, do it at the end of the board name. This will allow your keywords to appear first.

Board Descriptions

Like your Pinterest profile, your board’s description will help pinners know what the board is about. Additionally, it will help your board appear in searches.

Board Covers

Like selecting the “Album Cover” on a Facebook photo album, you can select the board cover for each of your Pinterest boards. This will allow you to display the most engaging image on the cover of each board, making your profile more attractive and your boards consistently in-line with your brand.

Secret Boards

Pinterest allows you to keep boards secret. There is no limit to how many things you can pin to a secret board. Nor is there a limit to how long the board can stay secret. However, once a board is made public it can no longer be made secret again.

Secret boards allow you to capture ideas. Additionally, starting a board as secret allows you to build up a backlog of pins, at least 10 is ideal, before you make the board public. This will give your board additional intrigue to potential followers.

Rearrange Boards

Different topics perform better during different seasons. As the holidays approach, you’ll want to move boards that refer to the winter months to the top of your profile. This will put the most relevant information directly in front of followers.
