Curious what size Facebook photo gives you the most Newsfeed real estate?
The answer’s not one size fits all. There are a variety of ways to share photos. You can share a single photo, multiple photos, a photo with a link preview, and a video preview. In each case, the ideal photo size varies.
Today, we’re going to focus on sharing a single photo. With Facebook’s current newsfeed layout, square photos give you the most real estate.
On desktops, Facebook’s Newsfeed displays square photos within a box that’s 470 x 470 photos. To ensure your photo renders well across multiple devices when it’s expanded by a user, you’ll want to upload a photo that’s 1200 x 1200 pixels.
How Square Facebook Photos Compare to Portrait and Landscape Images
Here, we shared a portrait photo. As you can see, Facebook shrinks the image height to just 470 pixels high and displays it flush to the left. This leaves white space on the right.
With a landscape image, Facebook scales the width to just 470 pixels, effectively shrinking the height.
However, with a square photo, you are able to take advantage of the entire 470 x 470 pixel box that Facebook provides.
Must You Share a Square Photo?
Absolutely not. Some images don’t lend themselves well to being cropped square. When it comes to sharing, quality always comes first. If the image looks best in a landscape or portrait layout – leave it that way.
